Halloween is just around the corner and to get in the right Halloween mood, we have gathered a list of scary stories… but not too Scary, spooky tales.

Told in the form of a series of letters ‘Frankenstein’ follows a young and charismatic Victor Frankenstein as he attempts to make his mark on the world of science. Taking a number of body parts from various corpses, he brings a monstrous creation to life which instead of being his crowning glory, terrifies him. The nameless monster escapes from his lab, taking many innocent lives before Frankenstein can track it down again.

Fettes and his friends meet for a drink in the local inn. Everything goes well, until the famous doctor Wolfe Macfarlane enters to treat a sick patient. Fettes gets very upset when he sees Macfarlane and a conflict arises between the two former medical students. Soon they will remember the bad decisions and crimes they have committed as students.

Why is Fettes so worried about seeing his old schoolmate? What do they have in common besides medicine? They have definitely done something wrong, but what can that be?

“The Island of Doctor Moreau” (1896) depicts a castaway’s adventures on a hellish island. The mad scientist Moreau has created abominable human-like creatures through a series of inhumane experiments. This blasphemy soon spells his end.

As Halloween approaches in the Cotswold village of Wendlebury Barrow, Sophie Sayers, new to the village, is suspicious of the fierce new vicar and his ban on the villagers’ seasonal celebrations.

Especially when he plans to replace them with a traditional Guy Fawkes’ Night party, and invites everyone to bring a guy (scarecrow) to burn on his giant bonfire.

Sophie thinks the vicar’s not the only one with dark secrets to hide. What about her boss, the beguiling bookseller, Hector Munro? Whose body will be found outside his village bookshop? Not to mention the one secretly buried beneath the vicar’s bonfire…

Breaking off his engagement to Agnes Lockwood, Lord Montbarry moves into an old dilapidated palace in Venice with his new wife and her brother. But when the lord suddenly ends up dead, his brother Henry and Agnes suspect an insurance fraud on part of Montbarry’s new family. As the palace is refurbished into a hotel, the pair opts to stay there in search of the truth and even with Collins’ normal flair for the supernatural in mind, the story veers in almost tangible spookiness. For the time, at any rate.
